Residential attic with exposed roof rafters, insulation, and a flexible HVAC duct run along the floor

The Cold Air You Paid For Is Cooling Your Attic: How Leaky Duct Runs Waste a Quarter of Every Cape Coral AC Cycle

October 11, 2026

Your AC can run flawlessly and you'll still lose a quarter of the cold air it makes — not to a bad compressor or a tired system, but to a duct run leaking into a 130-degree attic above a Cape Coral home. The unit never gets credit for the air it never delivers, so it just runs longer trying to make up the difference.

Where the cold air actually goes

Flexible duct runs in an attic connect at metal collars, sealed (in theory) with mastic or foil tape. Florida attic heat bakes that tape until it dries, cracks, and lets go — usually at the joints, not along the duct itself. Once a seam opens, conditioned air pressurizes the attic space instead of your living room. The thermostat still reads the room temperature honestly; it just takes a lot longer to get there, because a meaningful share of every cooling cycle is escaping before it ever reaches a supply vent.

This is different from ductwork that's simply old and undersized — a leaky seam can show up in ducts of any age, and a brand-new AC paired with leaking supply runs will struggle the exact same way an aging system does.

The 15-minute test

You don't need a blower-door test to get a strong read on this. On a hot afternoon with the AC running:

  • Feel the attic access hatch or pull-down stairs. If warm air near the opening feels noticeably cooler than the rest of the attic, air is escaping nearby.
  • Check supply vents room by room with the back of your hand. A vent that feels weak compared to others on the same system, especially in a room furthest from the air handler, points to loss along that specific run.
  • Look for dust streaking or a flattened, disconnected duct where it meets the attic trusses. Visible gaps or tape that's curled away from the metal collar are leaks you can literally see.
  • Compare your thermostat's run time to how the house actually feels. A system cycling long and often but rooms still feeling uneven is a classic leaky-duct pattern, not a tonnage problem.

If the test points to a problem, it's worth ruling out the easy fixes first — a vent accidentally closed or blocked in a spare room can mimic the same uneven-cooling symptoms as a duct leak, and it costs nothing to check.

Why this is worth fixing before it's worth replacing

A leaking duct run doesn't just waste cold air — it pulls hot, humid attic air into the system through the same gaps on the return side, which adds load the compressor has to work against all over again. Homeowners who assume they need a bigger or newer AC are often just feeding a bigger unit into the same leaky ductwork, which solves nothing. Sealing the actual leak is almost always the cheaper fix, and it's one our technicians check as a matter of course — not an upsell we go looking for.

Ductwork that's leaking badly enough often benefits from more than a seal-and-patch, which is where knowing when duct cleaning is actually worth it (and when it isn't) comes in — a leak and a dirty duct run are two different problems that sometimes get fixed at the same time.

If your attic access feels like a cold spot or one room in your Cape Coral home never quite catches up with the rest, it's worth having someone look before the next power bill does the talking. Contact our team for an inspection, or call (239) 402-3911.
