New Roof or New Windows in Cape Coral? Why Your AC Might Suddenly Run Non-Stop (and It's Not Broken)
If your AC has suddenly started running longer cycles or seems to never fully shut off, the first instinct is to assume something broke. But we get just as many calls from homeowners whose AC "went bad" right after a new roof or new impact windows went in — and in most of those cases, the system is working exactly as designed. It's just working against a house that changed underneath it.
A New Roof Changes How Much Heat Gets Into the Attic
Reroofing often means new underlayment, sometimes a different shingle color or a radiant barrier — all of which change how much heat transfers into the attic space above your living area. A darker shingle or a roof that traps more heat than the old one pushes additional thermal load down through the ceiling, and your AC ends up fighting a hotter attic than it was sized for. The system isn't broken; the heat load it's designed around just moved.
New Windows Change Air Infiltration — In Both Directions
Old, leaky windows unintentionally let some conditioned air escape and some outside air in, which sounds bad but which your AC was, in effect, calibrated around for years. Swap in tight, new impact windows and the house suddenly holds humidity differently — sometimes better, but occasionally trapping moisture load the system wasn't managing before, especially if the old windows were leaking dry outside air in during Florida's less humid stretches. The result can be a system that runs longer to manage humidity even though the temperature reading looks the same.
Why "It's Not Broken" Is the Right First Answer, Not the Last One
We're not saying to ignore longer run times after a renovation — we're saying don't assume a failing compressor before ruling out the simpler explanation. A system that's cycling longer because the building envelope changed is a sizing and airflow question, not a repair. Chasing a "broken AC" diagnosis first usually means paying for a service call that finds nothing wrong, when what's actually needed is a fresh look at whether the unit still matches the home it's cooling.
What Actually Gets Checked
When a homeowner calls us after a roof or window job with a system that suddenly runs more, we check duct static pressure, verify the attic insulation wasn't disturbed during the reroof, and look at whether the refrigerant charge and airflow still match the manufacturer's spec for the home as it exists today — not as it was when the AC was installed. Sometimes the fix is as simple as a filter or return-air adjustment. Occasionally, a renovation is significant enough that a proper Manual J load calculation is worth doing again from scratch.
