Florida's Humidity Is Lying to Your Thermostat: Why 75 Degrees Feels Like 80 in Your Cape Coral Home

You set the thermostat to 75. The thermostat says 75. You are still sticky, still warm, still reaching for the dial. Nothing is broken, and you're not imagining it — your thermostat is telling you the truth about temperature and nothing at all about the thing that's actually making you uncomfortable.

That thing is humidity. And in Cape Coral and Fort Myers, it's the variable that decides whether your home feels cool or just cold and clammy.

Why 75 degrees feels different here

Your body cools itself by evaporating sweat off your skin. When the air is dry, that evaporation happens fast and you feel cool. When the air is saturated with moisture, evaporation slows dramatically — and the same 75-degree air feels several degrees warmer.

At 45% indoor relative humidity, 75 degrees feels like 75. Push that to 65% or 70% — which is common in a Southwest Florida home whose system isn't running long enough — and the same 75 degrees feels closer to 80. You didn't get a warmer house. You got a wetter one.

This is why turning the thermostat down often doesn't help the way you expect. You're solving for the wrong number.

What your AC is supposed to be doing about it

Your air conditioner has two jobs: lowering temperature (sensible cooling) and pulling moisture out of the air (latent cooling). Moisture removal happens when warm, humid indoor air passes across the cold evaporator coil, condenses, and drains away.

Here's the part that matters: that only works when the system runs long enough. Short cycles cool the air quickly and shut off before meaningful moisture has been removed. Long, steady runtime is what actually dries a house out.

That's why a home can feel worse after a "quick" cooldown, and why the fix is usually about runtime, not about setting a lower number.

The five most common reasons a Cape Coral home stays humid

1. The system is oversized. This is the big one, and it's counterintuitive. An air conditioner with more capacity than the house needs satisfies the thermostat fast, shuts off, and never runs long enough to dehumidify. The result is a cold, damp house. Bigger is not better in a humid climate — properly sized is.

2. The fan is set to ON instead of AUTO. When the fan runs continuously, it blows air across a coil that's still wet after the compressor stops — and that moisture goes right back into your house. For most Florida homes, AUTO is the correct setting.

3. Low refrigerant charge or a dirty coil. Both reduce the coil's ability to condense moisture. A system low on refrigerant may still cool somewhat while doing almost nothing for humidity — and it's running under stress the whole time.

4. Duct leakage in a hot attic. Leaky return ducts pull superheated, humid attic air into the system. You're then paying to cool and dry outdoor-grade air before it ever reaches your rooms.

5. Outside air getting in. Failed weatherstripping, unsealed penetrations, an unbalanced system pulling in humid air, or a bath fan that isn't actually vented outside. Every bit of humid air that leaks in is load your system has to remove again.

What good numbers look like

Aim for 45–55% indoor relative humidity. Below 60%, most people feel comfortable at a higher thermostat setting than they expected — which is the whole payoff, because every degree you can raise the setpoint and still feel good is money you aren't spending.

A $15 hygrometer will tell you where you actually stand. Put one in your main living area and check it during the hottest part of the afternoon and again in the early morning. If you're reading 60%+ with the system running normally, something in the list above is the culprit.

Above 60% sustained, you're not just uncomfortable. You're in the range where mold and mildew become a real risk on drywall, in closets, behind furniture on exterior walls, and inside the ductwork itself.

What to try before you call anyone

  • Set the fan to AUTO. Free, immediate, and it fixes a surprising number of humidity complaints.
  • Change the air filter. A clogged filter restricts airflow and hurts both cooling and moisture removal.
  • Stop chasing the setpoint. Pick a temperature and let the system run steadily rather than dropping it 4 degrees when you feel warm.
  • Run bath and kitchen exhaust fans during and after showers and cooking — and confirm they vent outside, not into the attic.
  • Check the condensate drain. A clogged drain line means water that should be leaving your house is sitting in the pan, and it can shut the system down entirely.
